Security cameras might be the answer you’re looking for to help safeguard your home against intruders and other dangers. They can help you detect dangers early so you can respond quickly.

There are many options when it comes to security cameras. There are even a multitude of brand names you can choose from. In this review article, we’re going to focus on the Night Owl brand which is one of the top companies in the security camera industry.

But even Night Owl has many models from which to choose. So, how can you find the best security system from Night Owl for your home?

About Night Owl Security and Safety

Night Owl is a relatively new product on the market. It’s a start-up that was launched in 2009. However, being a startup has actually helped them respond quickly to consumer feedback and improve their product lineup.

Here’s a brief video from Night Owl that explains their history and how they operate. It should give you some comfort in knowing that you’ll be working with a trusted, quality company.

So, let’s take a look at one of the best brands on the market for security and safety for your home – Night Owl – and then examine some of the models that might fit your needs.

Here’s How We Determined Which Night Owl Cameras to Include

There were quite a few options to choose from, so we used a few set standards for deciding the best Night Owl security system for you. All products on our list have the following standard features.

  • 1080p video
  • Live streaming
  • App access
  • Motion detection

We also wanted to differentiate each product based on their special features and value for money. Positive reviews (when available) and ease-of-use were also given importance in the selection process.

So without further ado, here are our reviews of the 5 best Night Owl security cameras.

#1: Night Owl Security HD201 Infrared Video Camera System (Best Value)

The first Night Owl security camera system on our list is the HD201-86P-B, and it is by far the best wired option offered by Night Owl. It’s extremely popular with consumers and has loads of sparkling reviews on Amazon. Customers love the camera quality and how easy it is to get a live feed on their smartphones.

You get an 8 channel DVR with a free (not something you see every day) pre-installed 1 TB hard drive, along with 6 Infrared cameras. The DVR is also backward compatible with industry-standard analog BNC and Night Owl HD analog cameras.

You have the option of utilizing the Night Owl app to access the live feed of your cameras at any time and from anywhere via your smartphone. The app is free to use and allows you to save recordings to your phone as well.

The 1080p camera provides crisp images in true color to help you spot any signs of danger. The video feed is transmitted over an encrypted connection that only exists between your device and the security system, with no connection to a third-party Night Owl server. This protects your system from being accessed by hackers or being taken down by cyber-attacks.

You get all this for an amazing price, which is what makes it our top value pick among Night Owl cameras.

#2: Night Owl Wireless 1080p HD Home Security Camera System (Best Wireless Cameras)

This is the only wireless security camera on our list, but it is definitely the best one available in the Night Owl brand.

This package gives you two AC powered 1080p resolution, Full HD IP cameras with a Night Owl NVR (network video recorder). The NVR – essentially a better, more expensive version of the common DVR – allows you to easily connect with and set up your security camera system without the need for any pesky wires or extra installation.

Plus, you don’t need to keep wasting money on changing batteries to charge the cameras. You can just connect them to a power source, and they will automatically recharge when needed and save power too.

Since the battery is AC powered, you can utilize the internal motor and move the camera around as needed. The wireless system is just as secure as the wired one thanks to peer to peer encrypted connections.

This camera also includes a 2-way audio feature that allows you to use the Night Owl app to listen in on events through your camera’s mic and subsequently, use the speaker on your mic to transmit your voice. This is a great feature to warn any intruders to go away or even have a chat with your kids sitting at home.

This option also has a 1 TB hard drive included in the package, which is usually not available for free. All in all, if you want a hassle-free wireless security camera system, the CL-2WNC1-82 is the answer for you.

#3: Night Owl 4 CAM HD 1080p Wired Bullet Security Cameras (Best for Low Light)

Low light performance is essential since most intruders try to sneak in at night time or from dark corners of the property. Plus, many apartments and commercial buildings will often have dark indoor parking and other vulnerable spots.

If any of these situations resemble your case, our Night Owl security camera review of this model is the one to go with. The CAM-HD bullet cameras have some of the best low light performance in the business.

This package comes with four IR (infrared) bullet cameras. However, a DVR isn’t included in the package and will have to be purchased separately (unless you own one already). Keep in mind that these cameras are only compatible with Night Owl DVRs.

As far as low light performance goes, this camera provides 100 feet of crystal-clear night vision with 100 degree wide viewing angles. The auto IR cut filter, and low-lux sensors give you a fantastic low-light vision that’s suitable for the darkest corners of your building.

However, unlike the previous product, this camera has one-way audio and requires wiring to set up.

If you need more cameras, this package does give you the option of purchasing more add-on cameras with the same night vision features. You also get 60 feet of cable with each new camera purchase, so setting up isn’t a pain.

So, if you live in an area with multiple dark spots, this should be your Night Owl security camera of choice.

#4: Night Owl 4K Indoor/Outdoor Cameras (Best for Video Quality)

If you want the absolute best video quality, this 4K Night Owl camera is just for you. 4K resolution is probably the best video quality you’re going to find on the market, as of this writing. However, not only is the resolution of this product superior, but it also has extremely crisp image processing that gives you a super detailed live feed.

Since this is an add-on pack, you only get two 4K cameras for your purchase. There is no DVR, but you can connect them to a Night Owl DVR if you already have one, or you can purchase one separately.

The great thing about these cameras is that they can record in true color in low light situations, too. Out of all our Night Owl security camera reviews, this is the only one that does this.

Other than that, it has standard features like one-way audio and motion detection that sends push notifications to the Night Owl app on your phone.

Even though there aren’t many reviews on Amazon, the ones we saw gave this camera some sparkling compliments. Consumers were super happy with the video quality and the value for money they got from this product.

If you need extremely high quality video, this 4K option from Night Owl is the add-on package you’ll want to get.

#5: Night Owl 8 Channel HD Infrared Video Camera System (Best Motion Sensors)

This Extreme HD camera system is a gem that almost every user will love. Our Night Owl security camera review would definitely have been incomplete without the addition of this product.

The Extreme HD 3MP cameras come with a new and revolutionary motion detection technology called the Dual Sensor technology. Before this advancement, most cameras would just send notifications to the Night Owl app whenever the cameras detected any sort of motion. While this was useful, it created way too many instances of false alerts. Night Owl came up with the Dual Sensor technology as a response to this problem.

This 3MP Extreme security camera utilizes both an infrared sensor and a motion sensor to detect vehicles, animals, and people. Where the previous technology produced motion alerts in cases like heavy rain and flying bugs, this feature looks for both motion and heat signatures to identify alerts.

The L2 color boost technology also helps record in full-color in low light settings. The Extreme HD gets its name from the fact that it provides a 50% higher resolution video than its 1080p standard HD counterparts.

This package gives you six Extreme HD cameras and a Night Owl DVR with a 1TB HD drive for storage. There were quite a few ratings of this product, with most being very positive about the image quality and the success of the motion detector.

One of the few caveats to this package is that it’s priced at quite a premium and doesn’t offer a very large viewing angle. If money isn’t a problem for you, this is a brilliant option to go for.

Night Owl HD201 vs Lorex 4K MPX88W

Since both Night Owl and Lorex are well-respected manufacturers in the security camera industry, let’s see how two of their top products compare. We’ll take the top item on our list above, the HD201-86P-B from Night Owl and compare it to and contrast it with the Lorex 4K MPX88W, highlighting all the features you’re likely to care about the most.

Both systems are wired and have 8-channel DVRs. They each have a free app you can use to monitor the cameras from your personal device.

Depending on how picky you want to get, that’s about where the similarities end. There are several differences between these systems – some more significant than others.

The Lorex has two more infrared cameras – a total of eight – than the Night Owl. However, those 8 only have a viewing angle range of 90 degrees, whereas the Night Owl cameras give you 100 degrees of range. That said, if you have two more Lorex cameras to work with, those 10 degrees might not matter as much.

The Lorex DVR includes 2TB of storage space which is twice as much as the Night Owl. So, unless you expand this space at an additional cost, you’ll be overwriting your video much sooner with the Night Owl system.

Both systems’ cameras do record at 1080p, but it seems only the Lorex DVR has 4K resolution. Theoretically, you should get a better picture when playing back the Lorex video. (We couldn’t find any reference to 4K for the Night Owl DVR.)

As far as handling the elements, the Lorex is slightly better with an IP66 rating versus the Night Owl’s IP65. The Lorex can supposedly withstand a wider range of temperatures – from -22 degrees to 140 degrees – than the Night Owl whose range is -14 degrees to 122 degrees. But at the fringes of those ranges, does it really matter that much?

For cost, it depends on which vendor you’re using, but the Lorex is generally a little (less than $50) cheaper than the Night Owl. So overall, it looks like the Lorex would be the better choice of these two.

Night Owl FAQ

Can Night Owl cameras be hacked?

Honestly, everything can be hacked by a hacker who has enough and the right skills. Will your Night Owl camera system be hacked? It’s extremely unlikely. Since it’s not connected to anything else, but is rather a closed system, a hacker would really have to work hard at getting into it in the first place. Virtually all hackers wouldn’t consider that worth their time and effort. You’re safe from hackers with a Night Owl security camera system.

Which Night Owl security camera is best for night?

If you need to observe your surroundings in low light – in other words, at night – then you should consider our third option above and add Bullet Cameras to your system. Remember that these cameras are an addition to an existing system and not a complete security system in and of themselves.

Does Night Owl security need the Internet?

This is one of the beauties of a Night Owl security system. You don’t connect anything to the Internet where it is more easily exposed to the bad guys. This is why each system includes either a DVR or NVR. You do all the storage of your video (automatically) by yourself on your own equipment. It’s not “out there” somewhere in the cloud.

Does Night Owl record all the time?

You can record surveillance video as long as your Night Owl system has power – either battery or DC power – and as long as your DVR or NVR has storage space available.

Are the Night Owl security cameras waterproof?

All Night Owl cameras have a waterproof rating of IP-65. This means it is completely protected from dust and dirt getting inside (That’s the “6” in the IP code). However, it is only protected from low pressure water streams attacking it from any direction. (That’s the “5” in the code.) So, if you live in a hurricane area and experience one, don’t expect your cameras to survive. On the other hand, they will hold up during lighter rainstorms.
