However, we’re here to tell you that there’s more at play here than what meets the eye. Our detailed comparison below will highlight some features that the Pro model is better.
Ring Doorbell 2 vs Pro – Detailed Comparison
Over the years, Ring has managed to make a name for itself when it comes to the DIY home security industry. Their motto; affordable smart security. The company offers security equipment such as security cameras, smart lights, motion sensors and most importantly, complete home security systems to help you keep your property safe.
The Ring Video Doorbell 2 and Ring Video Doorbell Pro are some of the more widely compared ones; and for good reason.
The first thing we’re going to look at is the design of both the Ring Video Doorbell 2 and Ring Video Doorbell Pro.
Both these video doorbells have a similar design and color scheme, featuring a black camera and grayish body tone. There is also an illuminated button with a bright blue LED outline to highlight the button. Their footprint is almost similar (size). Even the camera is located at the same place; just above the button.
The only design difference is how the black and grey accents run across the body. Where in the Ring Video Doorbell 2 both colors are stacked (grey underneath with black on top), in the Ring Video doorbell Pro gray dominates the body, completely surrounding it. A black glass highlights the bell button, while blending your camera’s lens rather pleasingly.
The Pro is slightly thinner than the 2 model since it doesn’t have to make room for the battery.
Winner: Ring Video Doorbell 2
Next up is the price – a factor that has led many to settle with the Ring video doorbell 2.
As you would expect the Ring 2 doesn’t cost as much as the Pro. The Pro has more features like ‘Pre-Roll, Zoom and advanced motion sensors.
Another important consideration is that on average, a good quality video doorbell can cost you $150 – $250. If you want the best security and safety for your family in these uncertain times, the Ring Video Doorbell Pro offers great value for money considering its advanced quality and features.
Installation – (Setup & Video)
Winner: Ring Video Doorbell 2
When it comes to comparing installation, the battle between Ring doorbell 2 vs Pro becomes a one-sided contest. Ring’s Doorbell 2 is extremely easy to install, thanks to its battery-operated function. Just turn the device on, connect it to your Wi-Fi, attach it outside your home, connect it to your doorbell (optional) and phone, and you’re done!
The process can be a bit complicated in theory, but once you start, you will find that it is quiet simple. You can easily set it up yourself and it should take you 5 to 10 minutes at most.
The Ring Video Doorbell Pro, on the other hand, is not battery operated, so you are going to have to hard-wire the bell manually.
We recommend that you let your electrician install it if you’re not comfortable working with your transformer, since you’ll need to upgrade it if your existing doorbell uses anything less than 16 volts of power.
There is also a Pro Power Kit that comes along with the purchase that you’re going to have to install in order to ensure the bell is protected from surges.
Winner: Ring Video Doorbell Pro
If you consider any video doorbell, you will find that all of them compete in two key areas; build and video quality. In the comparison of Ring doorbell 2 vs Pro, we found that while both of them offer great video and sound quality, the Ring Video Doorbell Pro is better.
Although both doorbells feature 1080p video resolution, that doesn’t meant that video quality is the same. This is where the price of Ring Video Doorbell 2 starts to show. If you’re looking to spot details of who visited your house during the night from a distance, you’ll have a hard time with the Ring 2 than with Ring Pro.
The difference is that the Pro has the latest digital zoom technology and the 2 does not.
Apart from resolution, they both feature a 160° horizontal field of view. Both, the Ring Pro and 2, have a vertical field of view 90°.
When testing out both the cameras, we had a definite favorite; the Ring Video Doorbell Pro. The video quality matched – and even surpassed on many occasions – the results of more expensive and higher end doorbell cameras.
Audio comparison wasn’t as interesting, though. The competition of Ring Doorbell Pro vs 2 in terms of their recorded audio gave us almost similar results. From high-pitched sounds to the chirping of birds – it was relatively difficult for us to point out the difference in both model. We noticed a brief delay in the sound compared to video, but it was minor.
Winner: Ring Video Doorbell Pro
- Motion Sensors
Apart from the video and audio – which goes without saying – Ring includes motion sensors in every product it releases. From the lights and fans all the way to these video doorbells, they all serve a purpose whenever they detect motion. In case of Ring Video Doorbell Pro and 2, as soon as they detect something, they send you an alert directly to your smartphone.
This is a good and bad thing in one. Even if an animal passes through its detection circle, you will get an alert for which you’ll have to adjust the sensitivity.
The Ring Video Doorbell 2 lets you adjust this sensitivity but this adjustment doesn’t really matter much. In case you have a stray cat that likes to roam around on your front, you’ll be getting those pesky alerts until you adjusting isn’t working and turn the sensor off altogether.
On the other hand, the Ring Video Doorbell Pro’s motion sensors work wonders in this regard. They aren’t just adjustable, they’re customizable. This means you can keep the sensitivity as high as you want and only adjust how far the sensors’ area of detection stretches. The pro lets you draw detection zones on your smart phone to program your motion sensors accordingly.
- Wi-Fi Connection
The Pro supports 5 GHz Wi-Fi connections as well to ensure smooth flow of information, little to no lag between the camera feed and your smartphone screen, and to give you a much more reliable connection. Ring Video Doorbell 2, on the other hand, only supports 2.4 GHZ connections.
This is where the Ring 2 wins over the Pro model. It features a removable battery. The biggest benefit of this battery is the fact that the bell is mobile because of it. You can place it anywhere without having to connect it to your doorbell.
The only problem is that you have to recharge it. You can remove the battery with a quick release button when you have to charge it. If you haven’t hardwired your bell, you are going to have to take the bell offline to recharge it. This is a design flaw in many customers’ experience. The doorbell charges within 2-4 hours and lasts around 6-12 months, depending on the use.
This is why many users like the Pro version. Once you install the wiring, your all set and ready to go. Not having to replace any batteries which will cost you more in the long run.
- Other Features
Ring has done a remarkable job with both Ring 2 and Pro, considering that in most other features, both doorbells are similar. These include:
- Two-way communication
- Infrared night vision
- Alexa, SmartThings, IFTT support
- Echo Show
- Echo Spot
- Fire TV support
- Smart Lock compatibility
- August Locks
- Controllable from smartphone, and more.
Ring Doorbell 2 vs Pro – Which Is Better?
Now that you have a good idea of what to expect from both doorbells, it is time to put the debate of Ring Doorbell vs Pro to rest.
In our opinion, both these video doorbells have their own pros and cons, however we recommend you go with the Ring Video Doorbell Pro. We are of the firm belief that when it comes to your families safety and security it’s better to go with the one that has more features.
Although the price of the Ring 2 is cheaper. It is not enough to ensure the best security for your home.

- It has better and a more reliable video function
- Advanced motion detection and motion alerts
- You can create custom alert zones easily from your app, thus reducing the number of false alerts you get

- USB charging cable
- 4 Interchangeable face plates colors (Black, Satin Nickel, Pearl and Venetian)
#2: The Ring Video Doorbell 2 (Battery Operated)
Having declared the Ring Video Doorbell Pro the winner, it is important to point out that this doesn’t mean we don’t have any time for the Ring 2. It is a good choice if your on a budget. It includes, but aren’t limited to:
- Every time someone comes in to ring the bell, you get an alert on your phone as a heads up
- You get a reliable video doorbell at a lower cost
- Compared to the competition (other brands), this doorbell is cost-effective
- Battery operated
Verdict: Ring Doorbell 2 vs Pro
When shopping for Ring’s devices, you are bound to come across the debate of the Ring Doorbell 2 vs Pro. Both have their own pros and cons like any device.
For those of you who aren’t shy of spending a few extra bucks for the sake of quality, we recommend you go with the Ring Video Doorbell Pro. It is sleeker, more aesthetically pleasing, has more and better features, and can fit anywhere – even on narrower door jambs.
Plus, if motion sensors are important to you and the ability to customize their functionality, there is no question about whether or not you should go for the Pro. Just keep the installation process in mind.
If, however, you’re on a budget and aren’t willing to let go of the overall build quality and reliability offered by the Ring Pro, then the Ring Video Doorbell 2 could be the perfect fit for you.
